Comic Cadences

Have you ever seen the names Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle, Tig Notaro and Bill Cosby listed in a classical program? Stand-up comedy and classical music may appear at first to be an unlikely pair, but composer Chris Fisher-Lochhead has set out to capture the cadences of famous comics for his latest Spektral Quartet commission. Warming up the crowd are openers: Haydn’s Quartet Op. 33, No. 2 in E-flat “The Joke,” Sky Macklay’s rapid windup Many Many Cadences, and Oznat Netzer’s satirical scherzo, Schertch.
